Hearty congratulations to Professor Elinor (Lin) Ostrom from MG Chandrakanth, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, India. Madam you had invited me during 1989, while I was the Ciriacy-Wantrup fellow from UC Berkeley, to the Workshop at Indiana, where I gave a talk on Temple forests in India's forest development. Thanks for your kind encouragement. God bless you madam. You richly deserved it.

MG CHANDRAKANTH UAS BANGALORE said...

Professor Ostrom: While listening to my talk where I also covered the groundwater overdraft in peninsular India, you expressed great concern and commitment to address the predicament of high probability of initial and premature failure of irrigation wells and cumulative intereference externalities by proposing institutions. You gave me rich literature on Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework to carry home, which I share with my students and faculty regularly. Thank you again for all of your commitment to address the groundwater issues in India.

Dear Lin,
You'll be hearing from me separately, and I cringe at what your email buffer will be like now! But I wanted to say publicly through this forum how happy and pleased I'm sure all of your former students and colleagues are in hearing that you received this award. All of us who have had a chance to work with you know how unbelievably hard you've worked through your career and how much insight you've given the world. You truly deserve this recognition and thank you for all you've done for all of us and for advancing our understanding of all kinds of commons.

Dear Professor Lin Ostrom,

I was so happy when I heard the news! This means there is still hope for economists! In my trans-disciplinary wanderings I can now start to be proud of being an economist again!!! Congratulations and thank-you (for helping me recover from an academic identity crisis!).

Congratulations Prof. Ostrom! I had the privelege of meeting you during the IASC conference in England last year. I believe your award will serve as a great inspiration for those who work hard for the conservation and management of the environment and natural resources!--Aurelia Gomez (Philippines and Australia)

My hearty congratulations to Prof.Lin Ostrom for this belated recognition, specially because she is a promoter of a cause and concern ( about commons)rather than a projecter of her achievements. I had very educative opportunies to interact with her since the days when IASCP was initiated during1980s. Her ideas and analysis inspired me to explore different dimensions of management of commomn in dry tropical areas of South Asia and Himalayan mountain regions. Several students and admirers from Kathmandu (Nepal) join me in congratulating her.

What a wonderful act of endorsement dear Lin is this Prize for you and Vincent Ostrom for a life time dedicated and committed to support institutions of self-governing communities and their collective action on the commons.
I specially am grateful for the endorsement it provides to the importance of the commons and the efforts of poor pastoral and agricultural communties of the developing world and who are often times hapless commoners in a world of enclosures through insitutions of the market and private property. I acknowledge my personal gratitude to you and Vincent and salute you as the champions of the poor and deprived. Minoti Chakravarty-Kaul

I met Prof Ostrom first time in Gothenburg, Sweden and recently in Cheltemham, UK. These two meetings changed my way of thinking from hard core economics to the economics of commons.

Congratulation.

Lin -- what stunningly delightful news! There is indeed more to economics than the quants ever imagined. I remember the seminar we arranged for you a few years back at IFPRI and reaching further back, the stimulating ferment generated by discussions of why water user in the hills of Nepal cooperate. We've come a long way, and your role in the journey has been pivotal. Congratulations!

Dear Prof. Elinor Ostrom,
I convey my heartfelt congratulations on receiving the Nobel Honour. I hope, Environmental/Ecological/Commons Economics will receive wider audience from the governors of the world, now that you have proved the relevance beyond the reference book and journal concerns.
As a small researcher in Assam in India, I have had the opportunity to work on environmental governance (or rather lack of it) pertaining to the OIL industry.....and very profound results. I feel encouraged to expand my work.
May your work influence the best in research and for a blissful world.

Congratulations, and thank you for all your wonderful contributions!

Congratulations from Atlantic Canada! For all of us working in or studying the commons, this is a very exciting moment... It is wonderful to see the recognition for someone we all respect very much, and at the same time, this is a truly important recognition for the broader and more nuanced understanding of natural resource systems that is provided by commons research.

Many many best wishes to Prof. Elinor Ostrom on winning the Nobel. A pioneer like her deserved the Nobel much earlier. Her contribution to CPR is immense. The very first time I came across the concept of CPR, it was her writing that inspired me to explore more on the concept. I could write on Chilika Lagoon reflecting the concept of CPR and its co-management. She showed how the resources can be better used for common good. Once again wishing her best wishes.

Lin has been so very close to many of us and we share with her the joy. We know her support and guidance will always be of inspiration to us all the time. Congratulations Lin! Joe Matowanyika

Dear Lin! The first thing I could think of when someone rang with the news was - Wow! Finally an Economics Nobel for cooperation and governance! And it had to be for you! As Nancy says, its a blow against the tragedy scenario as the "natural" outcome of commons dilemmas. We last met exactly a year ago at Delhi University when you spoke about Nepali farmers' & irrigation commons. I will write more about current matters later (but already shudder to think of the state of your inbox). With many many thanks for the years of inspiration, enlightenment, and laughter. Elinor, This is a hearty boost for all involved in commons, and we are truly contented to bask in your reflected glory. For those of us in Natural England working on historic sites, with some common lands older than England itself (AD937), it is wonderful to think that you have shown how these ancient institutions are not just examples of quaint traditions but may have hard lessons of direct relevance to the modern world. The best news of 2009. Graham

As Mexican and an assiduous student about communal property when I first heard who won the Nobel Price in Economics, I was profoundly happy and touched since this is a recognition to alternative production systems than those prevailing in private property. This price is to encourage all of us who daily works in communal issues.....Muchas Felicidades Dra. Ostrom. You have many admirers and I'm one of those!
